Marine Life

Get to know the marine environment and the organisms that inhabit it!

Marine Mammals are a diverse group of about 130 species that depend on the ocean for their existence, specifically for feeding. Some marine mammals, such as polar bears and seals, breed on land but obtain their food from the ocean. Marine mammals play a significant role in the maintenance of marine ecosystems, for example their regulation of prey populations. They are an essential  part of the marine environment, which is concerning because currently almost a quarter of all marine species are considered threatened.

Crustaceans are a very large group of arthropods characterized by their exoskeleton, which they molt, or shed, to grow. Most crustaceans are aquatic, though some live on land, are parasitic, or are immobile, such as barnacles. There are over 60,000 known species of crustaceans.
